Aerating Your Compost Heap

From time to time you must ‘turn’ your compost heap. In other words lift it from one compost bin to another using a fork. This will encourage air to circulate throughout the bulk of the material. This speeds up the process of decomposition and the breaking down of plant material.

Ideally you should have an empty bin next to your current one to facilitate this. Then you can move material from one to the other with greater ease. If not you will have to empty your wooden compost bin, put the material to one side, and then refill it all over again.

If your compost is somewhat on the wet and smelly side then the chances are you need to add more carbon-based material such as dried bracken, dead leaves and cardboard.

If you find the heap is too dry then you must add more moist green material, also you can water the heap.
